Latest Update on Johor’s Flood

This is all as of 730PM, on Amateur Band … on the MARTS RKK repeater …

  • Kota Tinggi and Ulu Tiram is totall cut off, all roads heading in and out are not accessible, not even to trucks.
  • The highway heading towards Johor at KM110 - from Pagoh to Yong Peng, the part of roads collapsed. Restoration is ongoing now. Look for alternatives.

I live in Ulu Tiram. It’s not totally cut off; we came back from KL and JB City just fine this evening. Rain seems to have stopped too.

The PLUS highways are in danger of flooding over though - the side banks are completely covered.

I’ve heard horror stories too, and some of them have been really bad, especially in the case of local authorities and boats….*and* government sponsored food supplies.

If you have the opportunity (I think you will LOL) try asking some residents at Kota Jaya - if you haven’t already - about the response of many Malays to (datin?! puan?!) Halimah’s visit to them.

Also, heard stories about very rude govt personnel regarding monetary handouts etc. Anyone can confirm this?

freelunch2020: lol, join me where?

xpyre: yeah - i got this one from Malacca, where everyone who was a victim of flood, will only need to show proof of a utility bill and will be paid RM200, there was a lot of them according to 9M2MT, who when went and claim the RM200 from the disaster fund were told “Lu orang berapa kali mahu angkat wang?” - but that was the very first time they went and claim …

someone had beaten them to get the fund … someone inside or outside - that we dont know, all we know is that the fund which is being distributed to the victims are getting into the wrong hands …

I tried calling my parents in KT but couldn’t reach them by cell phone or home phone. Is getting a little worried. Talked to them sunday night and they were ok. The flood water has not gotten to them yet. Anyone has information as to the situation in KT? Is the rain still persisting? They do not report anything here. I got most information from wedsite. Thanks a lot.

earl-ku January 15th, 2007 at 11:04 am

Abby, what is your parents location? try the flood management numbers as they got those in papers, according to xpyre the condition at KT is that water is still rising this morning.

abby January 15th, 2007 at 11:46 am

Thanks. I finally found them. My mom said that the water seems to have receded slightly and the rain has stopped for now (forecast said wednesday). She said that the only 2 “villages” that are not flooded are “Da KT (with a BP gas station)” and “Sing San” (sorry, I only know the names in chinese). She hasn’t heard of any aids to the victims yet but she has heard of people having to pay to be rescued especially among non-malays. Many private associations organized their own rescue efforts.

earl-ku January 15th, 2007 at 11:53 am

Abby, i see, glad to hear that. Yeah thats the fucked up part, you rescue with no discrimination on skin colors, you only rescue with priorities on the elderly, children and then comes the women. you go in that order. But it seems that you need to pay to get rescued, thats fucked up! Sing San is Johor Bahru.

NGO and private individuals played most of the parts in most of the rescue efforts.

And yeah i forgot to mention that both HAM member 9W2PCK who risked his life doing rescuing works, he got a boat and was on his way to evacuate an old lady, the current was so strong he almost capsized his boat, as the engine power was not strong enough to fight the strong current, and on top of that he had to to put the boat for some repair works and the boat was badly damaged by those grilles of some those houses in the housing area, the bill came up close to 2k - i was told.

xpyre January 15th, 2007 at 12:34 pm

Just an update for Kota Tinggi folks:

1. Taman Kuso, water has reached the ceiling of single storey houses there.

2. Apparently, water has reached 16′ in some areas. Need confirmation on this.

3. Kota Tinggi hospital has flooded. Roads to Tmn Kota Jaya/Tmn Muhibbah via Jln Kota Kechil still cut off.

Be safe.

freelunch January 15th, 2007 at 12:53 pm

hey have u blocked comments from me? i can’t seem to post.

Yien Bin January 15th, 2007 at 10:20 pm

There’s still no way into Kota Tinggi. Water maintains at over 10 feet. Haven’t heard about anything in Johor Bahru, traffic seems fine from Skudai all the way to downtown custom.

Oh yeah, maybe our state’s Immigration HQ area is flooded, but that’s the very first place to be flooded whenever there’s a heavy rain, heh.

Abby January 17th, 2007 at 10:48 am

I heard from my parents that the water level is down substantially. Roads are open to Kota Tinggi. Some even managed to go home. Hopefully this will be the end of the continuous rain and the promised aids ($200 per person, from first flood, and $500 per household) by the government will finally arrive. Please post the website for donation (redcresent doesn’t seem to work from my location).
