Streamyx Again III
By earl-ku | August 18th, 2007 @ 4:30 pm

Read my previous 2 post - Streamyx Again and Streamy Again II, before going on to this one. So i got another call this morning from this one guy, and he said that he was going to come over and do some troubleshooting at my place and the CEO has yet to call me for an appointment since i heard of this news yesterday that he was going to come over to my house toosee how slow it was himself. So i told him i was only going to be home later in the afternoon and fixed a time with him.
I got home and somehow there wasn’t anymore ADSL signal on phone line, the ADSL light was blinking. The the guy called said he is already on his way. So i expected him to somehow fix this, when he reaches. 10 minutes later, some old guy knocked on my door, and i thought to myself - “Eh how come this technical guy is so damn old la …”. He turned out to be the CEO of TMNet, and there was also a General Manager of TMNet, and 2 other technical guy. Later another chinese lady showed up, she is the Asistant Manager of Communications.
So somehow i think all the big shots are all at my house, and i this was a surprise visit. So there they were, i showed them all the stats i have and downloaded a few files and did some test. I tried downloading a file(Adobe Acrobat Reader from adobe.com) on my laptop - a rather old one, a Centrino 1.5 on 512MB of RAM. The speed was like 10 - 12kB/s, the he offered to so test on his laptop, which was a Dell, which i see is kinda on par with my old laptop. To my aghast his download speed shot up to 160 - 170kB/s … TAKE THAT!
He did more test on speedtest.net, and he only got a few International location which was kinda slow, overall it showed my connection is kinda fast after all with constant speed of 160 - 170kB/s. I tried mine again, this time with the firewall turned off, antivirus off and i even tried to went into safe mode with networking, and even with different browser like Firefox, and Safari, and yet i am still getting 10 - 12kB/s when downloading that Adobe Acrobat Reader file.
In the end, i asked if this is the scenario from his troubleshooting point of view, what could be slowing down my computer, the technical guy started blurting out some non-sense saying there is a limit on what they are responsible for and stuff like that, i asked whats his personal opinion on this, he told me - it was my computer, something is wrong with my processor, and said i might have some sort of spyware running, i then told him i will put down money if he wants to, and bet that my computer is spyware and virus free. Eh i am not the buta-buta kind of user la!
Then now from what they have done i am made to believe that there is something wrong with my computer, thats why i am getting such slow speeds from Streamyx. Now i want your opinion, can a machine really slow down my downloading speed?
Try downloading the Acrobat Reader from adobe.com and tell me whats your average speed? Apparently i can get 180 on my line, but not on my laptop la …
I did one major mistake, i should have checked his computer for his settings, he might be using a proxy …
#Update 18/Aug/2007 8:25PM
I just came back from a yumcha session with Cely, Hong Kiat, Abc, and Cincau - who were all equally surprised that the TMNet’s CEO took 3 flight of stairs and sat on bed … haha - but he did, i do really appreciate their concern into this matter however if the “troubleshooting” session i had with TMNet earlier is dodgy … i am gonna very pissed off!
However, i check my broadband speed again, and i managed to get a 218.*.*.* range of ip, and to my surprise - this is what i get …

#Update 18/Aug/2007 10:16PM
I know some of you guys are gonna think i might be making this up, i might be delusional. Or you might just think i am big bollocks …
#Update 18/Aug/2007 11:08PM
Few guys did the test with the same server from speedtest.net and this is what they got
From Cincauhangus - 52kb/s or 6.35 kB/s

From Caker with a 12MB Singapore Starhub Cable connection - 193kb/s or 23.56 kB/s

Then i tried it again and this is what i got … - 1290kb/s or 157.47 kB/s

they screw you right in the comfort of your own house? damn… i want to get their laptop, without the configuration changed
August 18th, 2007 at 6:02 pm
How is that even possible? Maybe that laptop has been configured to by pass those filters/port/bandwidth limit and etc.
August 18th, 2007 at 6:02 pm
Mine is an average of 50-60 kbps. I’m running on the 512 package I think. He may be running through a proxy. You don’t expect the CEO to be sharing bandwidth with the rest.
So what happens next? They write in to the newspaper replying saying that the line is perfect but your laptop got problem? Case closed?
August 18th, 2007 at 6:34 pm
the CEO might hook up a VPN proxy that connects directly into their TMNet’s VPN Gateway then download the file via their TMNet’s link APPLE.
it’s such a simple trick.
August 18th, 2007 at 6:36 pm
I don’t think your computer slow down the download speed. You are right, he might be using a proxy. Since they said it’s your computer problem, why not you try it on other laptop?
August 18th, 2007 at 6:36 pm
additional information, he can tap into your phone line without going through your streamyx internet link to get the speed. do you remember did he use any push down program? (push speed to download faster program)
August 18th, 2007 at 7:07 pm
Yeah. VPN trick most likely. I’m using a VPN to get better speeds with foreign sites, especially the ones based in Europe. TMNet cannot be trusted for stable speeds.
August 18th, 2007 at 7:21 pm
Mine is average of 45kbps. I think the CEO isint clean. Screw them
August 18th, 2007 at 7:53 pm
Dude, first of all. What’s your plan subscribed?? 160 - 170kB/s sounds like a 2MB dl line to me.
August 18th, 2007 at 7:58 pm
Earl-ku,
Hi, Thanks for the update.
If you don’t mind, could you name me the TMNet CEO? Coz currently TMNet has an acting CEO which is a women. Of Course,TM’s CEO is a guy.
Also, what anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall are you using and does the connection speed differ from your desktop and your notebook?
In my opinion, that technical guy could have used a proxy or a VPN software that belongs to TMNet.
160-170Kbps is still not acceptable if you are using the 1MB package.
So what happened? Will they solve your problem or its solved?
August 18th, 2007 at 8:08 pm
clement, the only fault was that i never check his setting, i never thought of that until they have left … and he was saying he has got Trend Micro on his computer, firewall on la …
Jason, no idea …
TenthOfMarch, Yes, i do not expect him to be using the same priority on that computer, restrictions might have been lifted off somehow on that laptop or he is on proxy or vpn…
Simon Tan, not the CEO, the technical guy who did it in front of the CEO and GM…
Caker, yeah that what i have in my mind, if thats what he is going to be telling me, my perspective on IT will be all down the drain …
Simon Tan, No idea what that man, but my line did lose the ADSL signal like 30 minutes before they reach my house …
Chester, lets not go there, shall we … we shall assume they are really honest in solving this speed problem …
Yien Bin, my line is originally a RM88 - 1MB line, but somewhere mid of this year, its got upgraded, from the modem it shows its a 1.5 down and 0.5MB up …
scamboy, no worries, i will email u his name, and yeah its a man. I have AVG - Personal Edition, and Sygate Personal Firewall Pro, i have only a laptop - i assume they will close this case … from the way he soke to the reporter…
August 18th, 2007 at 9:07 pm
to me, the ceo really are trying to help. it’s the one down there who is not clean. maybe it’s true tat ur laptop got problem, or maybe they fixed it before the ceo came. who knows? next time jangan membabi buta……..haha…….
August 18th, 2007 at 9:15 pm
otyew, seriously man … u are telling me that the computer does really affect your internet speed? well i am surprised, u are a tech savvy guy …
August 18th, 2007 at 9:48 pm
CEO and GM?? Are you kidding? Can you tell them my maximum speed is just 80++kbps while my package is 1mbps… TMnut..
August 18th, 2007 at 10:08 pm
i’ve seen a lot of weird cases la. why dont u try to download the process explorer and u can check if there is any illegal process running. this is how i diagnose slow pcs. who knows?
i have seen illegal process which overwrites the host file which sets the antivirus update site to the localhost, i have seen lots of these things. but isnt it worth to give it a check?
try to download the process explorer from sysinternals.com. who know wat u might find
August 18th, 2007 at 10:19 pm
where got such thing… got spyware also wont be so slow lah -_-
August 18th, 2007 at 10:21 pm
otyew, i am not ur “typical” user, so do not assume i do not what i am doing, i know very well whats in my laptop inside out …
tingtitlei, yeap thats rite, i have my sygate firewall on, dumeter, and cfospeed - if there is anything going in and out without my knowledge, i will know …
August 18th, 2007 at 10:27 pm
tested mine with the same server like yours.
August 18th, 2007 at 10:59 pm
Come on man, computer cannot slow down a internet connection… should check their connection setting next time… usually i’ll get a 60.x.x.x ip range, it is really slow… i need to reconnect and get 218.x.x.x only i can surf at a good speed… any1 having this prob?
August 18th, 2007 at 11:09 pm
then fine la, i’m jus giving my opinion and u all need not to be so sarcastic, rite? anyway, i wont comment anymore. n pls read open ur eyes, i never said about spyware. as i said, jangan membabi buta before shooting others.
come on la, ppl jus giving opinion, if tak suka, jus don listen la, u don have to be such an arsehole to shoot ppl in the face…..u respect others, others respect u. jus learn how to respect others, jus treat ur old friends better n u wont lose them one by one……see ya
August 18th, 2007 at 11:24 pm
Jiun Jie, i think i had a post like that some time ago … but then after some time, it didnt work anymore, its just same no matter what ip pool you get your ip from anymore …
otyew, read my comment again, did i say anything bout you accusing me of having spyware, this is not “babi buta” - its not like i have only use Streamyx for a month or so, this is how it has been for the past year or so … its just not giving me the speed broadband is … who is shooting who? this is not shooting, i am making a legitimate complain, and look now, after the CEO visited me, my speed has increased tremendously … is that weird or what?
August 19th, 2007 at 12:02 am
Alright, we know what to do to fix the internet connection issue now. Write a complaint letter to newspaper and hopefully it catches TM CEO’s attention, and then the CEO pays you a visit, turn on his laptop, brag about his connection speed is fast and stable, talk cock a bit, then leave your house. After that, the internet connection problem will be fixed magically.
Thank you Earl.

You can try out cFosSpeed. This program will tie to your network card and there is a d/l and u/l speed indicator which would be very accurate as this will show total bandwidth used by your network card. If there is some spyware or virus using your line, the activity will show. When I didn’t do any internet related activity, the cFosSpeed panel will not show any activity. This is a good proof of no suspicious activity in your PC.
August 19th, 2007 at 9:50 am
grr, put all those anger into a letter and do as what i did …

Wow, I think so far I never get to 218.xx.xx IP. I am always connected to 64.xx and 124.XX IP which appears to be the IP in Kuching.
August 24th, 2007 at 3:02 am
earl-ku, right before the CEO plug in his laptops, do ur connection as fast as now? or the speed only increase only after the CEO plug in his laptop?
I suspecting that he plug in his laptop to trace the IP that is fixed on the laptop, so the server guy up there put some setting on the server to exclude u from the throttle. I think all normal streamyx subscriders is put under throttle mode, while special people such as TM staff were excluded from the throttle. This is only my opinion and may not be true of course.. and sorry for my broken english…. I hope u get my point
August 24th, 2007 at 2:12 pm
Wahlau.NET, yes they did … who is ah yap?
Young, heard the 218 range are for business users …
animous, coulb be also …its freakin slow before they came, but 1 hour before they came, my connection was down, no adsl signal at all …
